Sheboygan is my home base. I live just 20 miles west of the city, so I know it well. I have especially enjoyed seeing Sheboygan grow into a premier destination in Wisconsin. When people ask me where they should visit in Wisconsin besides the likely tourist spots of Door County, Wisconsin Dells, and Milwaukee, I recommend Sheboygan.
We know Sheboygan as the “Malibu of the Midwest”. Because of its unique shoreline jutting out into Lake Michigan, surfers around the world covet the waves in winter. Head to Deland Park anytime there is a windy day from August to April (peak surfing season, although you can surf year-round) and chances are, you will see surfers braving the chilly, often frigid winter temperatures riding the waves.
Sheboygan is also known as the “Bratwurst Capital Of The World”. You can come celebrate that famous sausage anytime, but the best time is during Brat Days, an annual summer event put on by the Sheboygan Jaycees. I’ll also share where you can get the best traditional brat in Sheboygan.
Sheboygan has transformed from the city I knew growing up. Today’s Sheboygan is a destination filled with arts, a walkable downtown area, lots of shopping, a foodies paradise, and exceptional beach areas. You will find plenty to do here.

- Sheboygan was officially incorporated in 1846. German, Dutch, and Irish immigrants who settled in the area contributed to its diverse cultural heritage, and significantly influenced the city’s growth.
- Maritime Industry: Sheboygan’s location along Lake Michigan made it a significant port in the 19th century. The city was a key player in the shipping and shipbuilding industries, which were vital to the region’s economy.
- Chair City: In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Sheboygan became known as “Chair City” because of its prominence in the furniture industry. Companies like the Phoenix Chair Company and Crocker Chair Company were major employers in the city.
- Historic Landmarks: Sheboygan is home to several historic landmarks, including Indian Mound Park, which preserves ancient Native American burial mounds, and the Sheboygan County Historical Museum, which showcases the city’s rich history.
- Population: As of 2021, Sheboygan’s population stands at approximately 48,180.
How Much Time To Spend In Sheboygan
I know I’m a little biased, but you could easily spend a whole week taking in most of the sights in Sheboygan and the surrounding area. The cute nearby villages of Kohler (yes THAT Kohler) and Elkhart Lake are each worthy of a day to explore. Since this book is specifically covering Wisconsin Harbor Towns, I will leave those places out of this guide, especially since there is so much to do in Sheboygan on its own.

Sheboygan offers visitors a wide range of things to do. From sailing lessons to the world-renowned John Michael Kohler Arts Center, your getaway to Sheboygan will be filled with interesting adventures. I highly suggest stopping in at the Visit Sheboygan Visitors Center. You can get lots of information from the staff, and pick up print information as well. Lighthouses
Sheboygan Breakwater Lighthouse– A visit to Deland Park and the harbor area will lead you to the cement break wall where you can walk all the way to the lighthouse. Although not typically open for public tours, its presence adds a unique charm to the Sheboygan shoreline, making it a must-see for visitors. The red lighthouse, with its classic design, offers a glimpse into the maritime history of Sheboygan and serves as a symbol of the town’s long standing relationship with the Great Lakes. Whether viewed from the land or the water, the Sheboygan Lighthouse is an enduring emblem of Wisconsin’s nautical heritage.

Bookworm Gardens
Bookworm Gardens is a botanical garden based on popular children’s books, and although your kids will love it, it is 100 percent enjoyable for adults too. It is my favorite place in Sheboygan (besides the beaches). Bookworm Gardens is an oasis, a place to come to admire the flowers and plants, as well as a place of reflection. It’s a reminder that we can all view the world with childlike splendor and leave the stress of everyday life behind, even for an afternoon. Each individual garden is modeled after a classic children’s book. Each section of the garden has copies of those books for you to take and read. There are interactive exhibits, a vegetable garden, and The Three Bears. Bookworm Gardens also hosts annual events. This is a must-stop on your visit.

John Michael Kohler Art Preserve
This unique destination is more than just an art museum; it’s an immersive experience that intertwines nature, art, and the profound legacy of visionary artists. The Art Preserve focuses on “art environments” – comprehensive artistic expressions that encompass an artist’s surroundings and way of life. It’s a celebration of folk artists, those among us who turn their living spaces into masterpieces. Featuring over 37,000 square feet of gallery space, each permanent artist has a dedicated space, created to give the visitor a sampling of the true environment of the artist. What I find fascinating is the glimpse into the minds of these artists. Most were untrained and worked with materials easily and cheaply available, like glass, stone, and even chicken bones.
Entry to the museum is free and you can make a reservation to visit although it is not required. Don’t miss the bathrooms.

James Tellen Woodland Sculpture Garden
A walk through this peaceful wooded property immerses the visitor into a real-life artist environment. Visit this serene garden before or after you go to the John Michael Kohler Art Preserve to really appreciate this place. You’ll find more than 30 different sculptures, many with a religious theme sprinkled on the property. The characters are almost lifelike, adding to the mystic feel of the property. It’s a place to reflect and feel the natural environment around you. Today the cottage serves as a temporary accommodation for artists in residence. No admission and open from dawn to dusk.

Take A Surfing Lesson
Since you’re in the “Malibu of the Midwest” why not pick up a new skill? I suggest taking a 2-hour surf class available through EOS Surf Shop. You may have to have a few adventurous bones in your body, but it’s a great checkmark on your bucket list. EOS also rents surfboards, paddle boards, kayaks, and all the gear needed. If you’d rather not try surfing yourself, you can always watch the surfers from shore when the conditions are right, usually the winter months.

Acuity Flagpole
Anyone driving near Sheboygan on I-43, can’t help but notice the enormous American flag, proudly welcoming visitors to the area. That is the Acuity Flagpole. The flagpole is 400 feet tall, flying an American flag that is 70 by 140 feet. It’s the world’s tallest symbol of freedom (as of this writing). You can actually get up close to it at any time. The flag weighs 250 pounds and does not fly during severe weather or high winds. Surrounding the base of the flagpole are pavers commemorating Sheboygan County residents killed in active duty from the Civil War to present day.

Kohler Andrae State Park
Kohler Andrae State Park is one of the most popular state parks in Sheboygan. It has one of the best Lake Michigan beaches, the two mile Dune Cordwalk, a campground, picnic shelters, the Sanderling Nature Center, and did I mention the beach? There are a total of seven trails in the park and plenty of outdoor activities to enjoy. The marsh is great for birdwatchers, and bikers will find a 2 1⁄2 mile trail, along with plenty of roads to navigate. You’ll also find picnic areas, a fishing pier, and the nature center. Many areas are wheelchair-friendly, and the park even has two beach wheelchairs available. You just need to call the park.

John Michael Kohler Arts Center
The arts are alive in Sheboygan, which is definitely evident when you are downtown. Murals are everywhere, the beautiful City Green hosts events, and one of the real gems is the John Michael Kohler Arts Center. The Arts Center hosts an ever-changing list of exhibitions in all mediums, and ongoing events, so it’s usually a flurry of activity. Visitors will also find a cafe, a shop, and you MUST visit the restrooms to see why they’ve been chosen as the world’s best.

Farmers Market
Wednesday and Saturday mornings are busy in Fountain Park in the downtown area. The weekly farmers market not only has fruit and vegetable stands, but farm-raised meat, cheese, honey, and fresh flowers. You’ll also find food vendors and artists selling their wares. The markets open in June and run through fall.

Deland Park
This lakeside park is one of the favorite parks of locals and visitors in Sheboygan. Its location on Lake Michigan makes it a favorite for swimmers, surfers, and those who want to enjoy the sparkling blue waters. There is a play area for the kids and volleyball nets set up on the beach in summer. This park is also home to many events throughout the year like the 4th of July celebration and more. This is also the final resting spot of the remains of the Lottie Cooper, a three-masted schooner that sank in 1894. The shipwreck was rediscovered before construction of the current marina in 1992.

Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary
In 2021, a vast 962 miles of Lake Michigan coastline from Port Washington north to just above the Kewaunee County line was designated as the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary. This includes the harbor towns of Port Washington, Sheboygan, Manitowoc, and Two Rivers. There are 36 known shipwrecks and a suspected 60 more within the boundaries of the underwater sanctuary. Twenty-seven of those 36 shipwrecks are listed on the National Register of Historical Places. Since Sheboygan is in the middle of communities that are home to the sanctuary, it’s listed in this chapter. There are ongoing talks and plans between sanctuary communities about what role the sanctuary can play in terms of tourism for these Wisconsin Harbor Towns.

This beautifully restored 1928 historic theater, originally a vaudeville house and movie palace, now serves as a vibrant venue for a wide array of performances, ranging from live music and theater to dance and film. The Weill Center is not just a place to witness great art; it’s a cornerstone of Sheboygan’s cultural identity. Throughout the year, the center brings in national acts, and amazing plays, as well as local community events.

This park is an outdoor sanctuary with six different habitats, trails, and an Ecology Center. There are 135 acres to explore. Grab a map of the park and follow the trails to look for all the bird species listed. How many can you find? The park hosts many events and programs for all ages. There is no entry fee.

Kohler Andrae State Park
There are 137 sites, 52 are electric, and one accessible cabin in Kohler Andrae State Park. Many of the sites are wooded. There are also two group camping areas inside the park. This campground is very popular and books out 11 months in advance. This is one of my favorite Wisconsin state campgrounds. The campground has two shower houses with flush toilets and numerous vault toilets. There is a dump station.
