I love a great ATV (all-terrain vehicle) adventure, so why not find a perfect ATV tour in Oahu? It had been on my Hawaii bucket list, so I started doing research before my last visit. I wanted to combine adventure and a glimpse into the culture of Oahu. I didn’t want a tour that was cookie cutter. I wanted something in depth to explore the real Oahu, an educational experience, a tour on dusty, muddy trails. As an experienced ATV rider, it needed to be the ultimate island of Oahu ATV adventure.
Welcome to Haleiwa, the North Shore surfing town and home to the Snow Puffy, where the thrill of adventure and the beauty of nature blend seamlessly. North Shore Eco Tours offers an unforgettable experience through their ATV tours, perfect for those looking to add a dash of excitement to their Hawaiian vacation. Whether you’re an adrenaline junkie or a nature lover, this ATV tour is a must-try.
So my daughter Megan, her husband Justin, and I chose the Pua Pua’a Piglet ATV Adventure Tour. Just one of, and the most popular tour, that North Shore Eco Tours offers.

Why This North Shore Eco Tours ATV Tour In Oahu Is Unique.
The North Shore Eco Tours’ Pua Pua’a (Piglet) ATV Adventure is a standout experience for several reasons, making it a unique tour that captures the essence of Oahu’s natural beauty and cultural heritage. If you want an authentic experience, choose North Shore eco Tours. They are Native Hawaiian owned!
Immersion in Hawaiian Culture and History:
The Pua Pua’a ATV Adventure offers more than just a thrilling ride; it is a journey into the heart of Hawaiian culture. The tour is named after the Hawaiian word for “piglet,” reflecting the area’s rich history and connection to the land. Guides share stories and legends of Hawaii, offering a deeper understanding and appreciation of the island’s cultural heritage. This educational aspect makes the tour an enriching experience, connecting riders with the spirit of Aloha and the island’s past.
Exclusive Access to Private Trials:
One of the most significant aspects of this tour is the exclusive access it provides to private trails. We rode through private lands owned by the Kamehameha Schools, some leased out to local farmers. We rode past rows of sugar cane leased by Ko Hana Rum, and drove through groves of fruit trees that produce bananas, papaya, and mango. The rest of the ride took us through the rugged terrain and untouched rainforest. This exclusivity adds a sense of adventure and discovery, as each turn brings a new and breathtaking view.
Eco-Friendly and Sustainable Approach:
North Shore Eco Tours is committed to sustainability and environmental preservation. The Pua Pua’a ATV Adventure is designed with eco-friendliness in mind. The Kawasaki ATVs used are well-maintained to minimize their impact on the environment, and the tour adheres to strict guidelines to ensure the natural habitats are respected and preserved. This approach allows participants to enjoy the thrill of an ATV ride without compromising the integrity of the natural surroundings.
Engaging and Experienced Guides:
The tour guides at North Shore Eco Tours are not only knowledgeable about the terrain, but also passionate about sharing the wonders of Oahu. They ensure a safe, enjoyable, and informative experience, pointing out native plants, explaining the local ecosystem, and sharing insights into Hawaiian traditions and practices. Their expertise and enthusiasm enhance the overall experience, making it educational, fun, and safe. Our guide, Ryan, added all this and more into our outdoor adventure.
A Blend of Adventure and Relaxation:
While the Pua Pua’a ATV Adventure is thrilling and action-packed, it also offers moments of serene beauty and relaxation. The tour includes stops at picturesque spots where participants can take in the views, relax, and even enjoy a snack or a picnic. This balance of adventure and tranquility makes the tour suitable for a wide range of visitors, from adrenaline seekers to those looking for a peaceful nature escape.

How To Prepare For Your ATV Adventure.
Preparing for the Pua Pua’a Piglet ATV Adventure with North Shore Eco Tours requires some thoughtful planning to ensure a comfortable, safe, and enjoyable experience. Here’s a guide on how to prepare, including what to bring, how to dress, and other essential tips for visitors. After you sign up for the tour, you will be sent more information.
Dress Appropriately:
Comfortable Clothing: Wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Wear long pants to protect your legs from brush and debris. We wore shorts, since we were just heading back home after. I would recommend bring an extra change of clothes along if you will do something after your tour.
Sturdy Footwear: Closed-toe shoes are a must for safety while riding the ATV. Opt for sturdy, comfortable footwear like sneakers or hiking boots.
Sun Protection: The Hawaiian sun can be intense, so bring a hat or a bandana, and don’t forget to apply sunscreen before the tour.
Safety Gear:
North Shore Eco Tours will provide essential safety gear like helmets.
I would recommend bringing goggles or sunglasses to protect your eyes from dust.
Hydration and Snacks:
Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the adventure.
You can bring a snack along, but the tour had some snacks along that we enjoyed.
Weather-Appropriate Items
Rain Gear
The weather in Hawaii can be unpredictable. A light rain jacket or a poncho can be handy. It rained during our entire tour and even though we brought rain jackets; they had ponchos available.
Extra Layer
Depending on the time of year, it might get cooler, especially in the higher elevations, so consider bringing an extra layer of clothing.
Personal Items
Camera/Phone: You’ll want to capture the stunning views and moments, so bring a camera or phone. Consider a waterproof or dust-proof case for protection.
Backpack: A small backpack can be useful to carry your water, snacks, and personal items.
Insect Repellent: If you’re sensitive to bug bites, bring insect repellent.
Driver’s license: You can switch drivers since these vehicles accommodate 6 people, so bring your valid driver’s license along. Drivers MUST be at the minimum age of 21.
Pre-Tour Preparations:
Physical Readiness: Ensure you’re physically prepared for the activity. While ATV riding is not overly strenuous, a basic level of fitness is beneficial. They recommend if you have back issues, this may not be for you. You get jostled around on the rough terrain. If you have questions, make sure you ask before you sign up.
Familiarize with the Rules: Be aware of the safety rules and guidelines provided by North Shore Eco Tours.
Arrive Early: Plan to arrive 30 minutes ahead of your scheduled tour. You will need to complete any necessary paperwork, receive safety briefings, and get acquainted with the equipment.
Respect for the Environment:
Follow the ‘Leave No Trace’ principles. Carry out what you carry in and respect the natural surroundings.
Health and Safety:
If you have any medical conditions or allergies, inform the tour guides beforehand.
Ensure you are well-rested and not under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
By following these preparation tips, you’ll be well-equipped to enjoy the Pua Pua’a Piglet ATV Adventure to the fullest, combining the excitement of ATV riding with the breathtaking beauty of Oahu’s North Shore.

What Can I Expect Before And During The Tour?
You will get all your instructions when you purchase your tour. Once you arrive at the North Shore Eco Tours location in Haleiwa, you will park right there. Arrive in plenty of time before the tour begins. You will need to check in and sign the waiver, get a minute safety briefing along with the rules. Drivers will get a short practice run and your tour guide will show you how to use the walkie talkies to communicate with them. That’s important because you don’t want to miss what he says.
There is a port o potty on site, but you can walk over to the North Shore Marketplace and use the public bathroom before the tour. A side suggestion would be to have breakfast at Kono’s in the marketplace before your tour. Love the burritos!
You will meet your guide and he will introduce you to the Kawasaki multi-passenger ATV. This is a small group tour. Ryan, our guide, was the lead vehicle. Beside us, in one off-road vehicle, there was a mother-daughter in another. Solo travelers could easily go too, or book the new Mongoose single person ATV tour instead. You will then go through the safety info and test drive the ATV.

The tour winds through diverse terrains. Riders can expect a combination of easy dirt road trails and more challenging ruddy sections, providing an exciting and dynamic riding experience. You will stop several times to admire the ocean views and listen to your guide educate you on the Hawaiian culture and how sacred the land is to them. This was so fascinating. I had a whole new respect and appreciation for this land and the natives that have called Hawaii home for generations.

Scenery
The scenery includes lush tropical rainforests, where towering trees and dense undergrowth create a canopy of green. As we rode through the rainforest, I caught the scent of eucalyptus trees. Riders pass through open fields and farmlands, scenic valleys, and rugged landscape showcasing Oahu’s agricultural heritage. The tour will also take you through a private nature reserve, offering glimpses into protected ecosystems where conservation efforts are ongoing.

Flora
Participants will see a variety of native Hawaiian plants and fruit orchards. This includes the ohia lehua tree, known for its beautiful red flowers, and the koa tree, famous for its rich, dark wood.
The tour also passes through agricultural areas with fruit-bearing trees such as guava, mango, or papaya, in the first part of the tour. You will also see sugar cane.
Wildlife
While wildlife sightings are not guaranteed, participants might spot various bird species, particularly native Hawaiian birds. The forests of Oahu are home to birds like the Hawaiian honeycreeper and the Nene goose, Hawaii’s state bird.
Although they usually sleep during the day, you may glimpse a wild boar.
The pinnacle of the tour was halfway through when we stopped at the top of a mountain for a rest and our provided snack. We were in a huge clearing. Since it continued to rain and it was foggy, I can only imagine the spectacular view. There were two yurts built here, intended for future use as a camping type tour. Luckily, there was a large open picnic area with a roof, so we had some relief from the rain. It was also a blessing that we brought sweatshirts, cause it was really chilly here.

Ryan provided us with banana bread made from Poi baked at Haleiwa Bakery, cut pineapple, and a variety of macadamia nuts.
We finished our snacks, hit the outhouse over by the yurts, we lifted our wet and muddy bodies back in our wet and muddy ATVs and made our way back to the home base.
The tour time is about 2 ½ hours and while it is expensive, you can feel good about the fact that this is a native run business run with a mission to educate and protect the environment. It is far from the “touristy” experience most other ATV tours provide.
That is why I chose this tour and it’s why I will recommend it to all visitors that are interested in learning more about the culture and land of Oahu.
