Do you find when you travel that lodging can make or break a successful vacation? I’ve stayed in some questionable places in the past. Sometimes I feel that the place I rest my head for the night is just that, a place to sleep and shower and take care of basic needs. Then there are other times when I want a homey place and comfy bed to sink into, maybe come back mid day for a little rejuvenating nap, a place to feel “at home”.
There are unpleasant places, mediocre places, and places that you would return to and recommend to friends and family.
I had the opportunity to stay at a fabulous Bayfield Wisconsin bed and breakfast on a recent stay in Bayfield.
Let me introduce you to a fabulous Bayfield Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast
Artesian House, a Bayfield, Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast is one of those places you’d suggest to friends, family, and anyone else interested in Bayfield Wisconsin lodging.

There’s a reason Artesian House has earned a Trip Advisor Traveler’s Choice award two years in a row. Not only is the 23 acre property peaceful and secluded, but the owners Christine and Dennis are remarkable hosts full of information about Bayfield, which will make your stay there even more amazing.
It thrilled me to stay at Artesian House when I was in Bayfield doing research for my upcoming Wisconsin Harbor Towns travel guide thanks to the Bayfield Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center who hosted my stay. I researched my Bayfield Wisconsin lodging beforehand and had a feeling I would enjoy my stay.
About Artesian House Bed and Breakfast
The previous owners built the house as a bed-and-breakfast in 1996. After vacationing in Bayfield for 21 years, Dennis and Christine knew that someday they wanted to make Bayfield their home. They purchased the property in 2013.

They are very community orientated and not only are a wealth of information about Bayfield and the surrounding area, but willing to share tips and suggestions about attractions and cool places to go. Since I was in Bayfield for book research, I had several conversations with Christine in particular about things to do in the area and restaurants that would be good choices for me to dine at. They were both very welcoming and truly love meeting and serving their guests so they have a memorable Bayfield stay. Normally, I am very introverted with people I just meet, but both Christine and Dennis made me feel very welcome and comfortable.
My favorite tip from Christine and one you will find useful also: If you are going on the Apostle Island Cruises, arrive 45 minutes before at least to get in line and grab a spot up top on the boat. Plus park your car in the lot off Manypenny Avenue and S. Second Street. Then walk through the park to the dock.
Artesian House Bed and Breakfast has four guest rooms each with private bathrooms and separate guest entrances open to a deck wrapped around the house. I stayed in the Basswood Room. The queen bed was incredibly comfortable, and I had plenty of room to move around. All guest rooms are open to a common living area and the kitchen area. There is a small refrigerator and microwave for guest use and ice if needed. The common area has scenic views of the property and there are trails to the artesian well on the property. There is a car charging station if needed.

A Travel Green Wisconsin business
Artesian House is a certified Travel Green Wisconsin business. The Wisconsin Department of Tourism started Travel Green Wisconsin in 2006 to promote business that use environmentally friendly practices to reduce their environmental impact. Artesian House uses solar heated hot water and PV solar for electricity. This was reason enough for me to want to stay here.
The breakfast is the spotlight

Christine and Dennis serve a hot breakfast between 7:30 and 9:00 AM. I can tell you the breakfast is amazing! Locally sourced breads, pastries (like cakes from nearby Gourmet Garage and granola for Coco’s in Washburn), and produce make this breakfast extra special. Bayfield is known for their farms and orchards, so when I visited in August, we had a bounty of fresh fruit served to us. You also have yogurt, cereal, and oatmeal if you choose along with hot breakfast. You can choose to dine at the dining table with the other guests, in your room, or on the deck. I enjoyed interacting with the three couples that were also guests at Artesian House at the dining table.

Once guests finish breakfast armed with suggestions and tips from the hosts, you’ll want to drive the two miles into Bayfield for a day of activities. Bayfield is a picturesque town along the majestic Lake Superior shoreline. When you finish exploring Bayfield, hop on the Madeline Island Ferry and explore the largest of the Apostle Islands.
After a full day of adventure, having a pleasant place to stay is a welcomed relief to travelers, and I was no different. It was fun to come back to Artesian House and share my adventures with Christine and Dennis before retreating to my cozy room to plot and plan the next day’s itinerary.
I couldn’t have asked for a better, more welcoming place to call my home during my stay in Bayfield.
Is Artesian House a Bayfield Wisconsin Bed and Breakfast accommodations I would recommend to friends and family?
One hundred percent yes.
Thank you to Bayfield Chamber and Visitors Bureau for partially hosting my stay. As always, all reviews and opinions are my honest account of my experience.
