There’s no shortage of cool places in Lexington, Kentucky as I found out on a recent trip. After our bourbon distillery tour at Woodford Reserve, we found a cool little museum in Versailles, Kentucky just a short distance from Lexington.

The Nostalgia Station Toy & Train Museum is housed in an old train station built in 1911. The station is perfectly restored and houses a huge collection of toys and trains spanning a time frame of 1890’s through the 1990’s. The owners comb the country looking for items to add to their collection. Just the train station alone has an interesting history as we found out from owners Winfrey and Wanda Atkins.

I will say the real gem located here is the owner Winfrey. Since we were the only people there, he explained so much about the history of his collections and pointed out unique items that we would never have noticed if we had just walked through ourselves. For me, seeing all the old trains brought back memories of my Dad’s collection of trains he kept from his childhood. I have to say, this is a must stop for any train enthusiast, and even though neither Becky or I are train collectors, seeing Winfrey’s collection and hearing the passion in his voice while talking about his favorite and rare pieces kept us interested for the hour or so we were there. You can see many pieces from such companies such as Lionel and American Flyer among many others.

Along with trains, the Nostalgia Station has some pretty impressive antique toys on display. Dolls, tea sets, and other old toys that feel like you were stepping back in time. Toys from makers such as Buddy L and Marx. There also are several extremely rare finds as well. It was fun to see some items that were recognizable from my childhood.

I would say the highlight of the museum is the huge authentic functional Lionel Dealers Display from the 1950’s from a store in downtown Lexington. Along with the original dealer display, there is a working reproduction of a 1926 dealer display.ย After we were done with our guided tour Winfrey fired up this display for us so we could see both in action!
Clearly the trains are the star at this museum as you can see many railroad artifacts, many original to the train station, scattered all throughout the building.
Nostalgia Station Toy & Train Museum was a hidden gem definitely worth the stop on a visit to Lexington, Kentucky! To make the most of your visit, make sure and ask Winfrey lots of questions about his collection!

I’m going to share your post with John. He’d LOVE to see this! Sounds like I would too. He just recently changed the ringtone on his phone to a train sound. ๐
This makes me smile!! It certainly was a fun place. You will have to make this a stop for your next adventure. The owner would probably talk to John for hours. ๐
