23 Must-Have Experiences in Paris: A Personal Guide for First-Time Visitors

If you’re planning your first trip to Paris — or even your fifth — you’re probably wondering what you absolutely cannot miss. After traveling to Paris a few times and currently planning my next trip in a few months, I’ve gathered a list of my favorite experiences in Paris that truly capture the heart, beauty, and rhythm of the City of Light.

These aren’t just tourist stops — they’re the little moments and iconic sights that make Paris unforgettable. So whether you’re sipping wine under the Eiffel Tower or riding the Metro like a local, here’s everything you need to experience for a magical Paris adventure.

1. Watch the Eiffel Tower Sparkle at Night

It’s iconic for a reason. Every hour after sunset, the Eiffel Tower puts on a five-minute sparkle show that’s pure magic. My favorite spot to watch? The steps of Trocadéro with a warm crêpe in hand.

2. Stroll Through the Louvre

Yes, the Mona Lisa is here, but there’s so much more. The Louvre is massive, and every gallery holds treasures — from ancient sculptures to Renaissance masterpieces. I always recommend choosing a few sections to explore and soaking it all in.

3. Eat a Fresh Croissant at a Local Boulangerie

Forget hotel breakfasts. Head to a neighborhood bakery and grab a buttery, flaky croissant. Pair it with a café crème and enjoy it on a nearby bench — it’s a perfect Parisian morning.

4. Walk Along the Seine at Sunset

The Seine is the soul of Paris. Imagine strolling from Notre-Dame to the Eiffel Tower at golden hour, watching the boats float by and the city glow in the fading light.

5. Climb to the Top of Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre

The climb is steep, but the panoramic view of Paris is worth every step. Afterward, explore Montmartre’s cobbled streets and bohemian charm. You can also take the Funicular to the top for the price of a metro ride.

6. Explore the Musée d’Orsay

Set in a stunning old train station, the Musée d’Orsay is filled with masterpieces from Monet, Degas, Van Gogh, and more. It’s slightly less overwhelming than the Louvre — and just as impressive.

7. Sit at a Café and People-Watch

There’s no better way to experience Paris than from a sidewalk café. Order something simple, sit back, and watch the world go by. No rush, no pressure, just enjoy.

8. Shop at a Parisian Flea Market or the Neighborhood Marche

The Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen is a treasure trove of antiques, vintage fashion, and quirky finds. I could spend hours hunting for unique souvenirs and charming oddities. If you’re not ready to do that, all the neighborhoods in Paris have their own markets selling food and other things.

9. Have a Picnic in Luxembourg Gardens

Grab a baguette, some cheese, and a bottle of wine, and head to Jardin du Luxembourg. It’s one of the most beautiful parks in the city, and a favorite spot for locals.

10. Get Your Portrait Sketched at Place du Tertre

In the heart of Montmartre, artists set up their easels to draw visitors. I once had my and my daughter’s portrait done here, and it’s one of my most treasured Paris keepsakes. It may be touristy and cheesy, but it sure is fun!

11. Take a Seine River Cruise

Especially at night, cruising along the Seine is magical. The monuments glow, the city feels alive, and you’ll see Paris from a whole new perspective.

12. Snap a Photo at Rue Crémieux

This quiet, pastel-colored street is one of the most Instagrammable spots in Paris. Arrive early for the best light and a peaceful photo op.

13. Visit the Palace of Versailles

A short train ride away, Versailles is jaw-dropping in its grandeur. Don’t miss the Hall of Mirrors or the beautifully manicured gardens.

14. Do a Wine and Cheese Tasting

France does it best — no surprise there. Whether it’s in a cozy wine bar or a dedicated tasting class, learning about French wine and cheese is both delicious and fun. I can recommend going to O Chateau.

15. Browse Books at Shakespeare & Company

Just steps from Notre-Dame, this English-language bookstore is a literary landmark. Come for the books, stay for the cozy vibes and handwritten notes tucked in the shelves.

16. Shop the Boutiques of Le Marais

Stylish and walkable, Le Marais is packed with indie boutiques, vintage shops, and some of the best falafel in the city. It’s my go-to shopping district every time.

17. Make a Wish at the “I Love You Wall”

This mural in Montmartre features “I love you” in over 250 languages. It’s romantic, sweet, and makes for a perfect photo with someone you love (or just yourself!).

18. Dine at a Traditional Paris Bistro

Cozy, candlelit bistros are where you’ll find the best classic French dishes. I still dream about the steak frites and crème brûlée I had at a tucked-away spot in the Latin Quarter.

19. See a Show at the Moulin Rouge

It’s glitzy, theatrical, and completely over the top — and I loved every minute. The costumes, music, and champagne make for a fabulous night out.

20. Visit a Local Monoprix

Think of it as the French version of Target — but with better snacks and cuter clothes. I always pop in for souvenirs, chocolate, and last-minute necessities. Shopping and Paris go together like peanut butter and jelly.

21. Shop for Skincare at a French Pharmacy

If you’re into skincare, don’t skip the pharmacy. French brands like La Roche-Posay, Caudalie, and Nuxe are everywhere — and usually way cheaper than back home.

22. Wander the Gardens of the Palais-Royal

Tucked behind the Louvre, these peaceful gardens are a quiet escape from the tourist crowds. The striped columns in the courtyard are quirky and fun for photos, too.

23. Ride the Paris Métro

Riding the Métro is an essential Paris experience. It’s quick, affordable, and gives you a glimpse into local life. I love the art nouveau station signs, the tiled walls, and the joy of mastering the system. Buy a Navigo Easy Card, load it up at a kiosk and you’ll feel like a local in no time.

Paris isn’t just a destination — it’s a collection of beautiful moments. From sipping coffee on a sunny terrace to hearing music echo in a metro tunnel, every little thing adds to the experience.

If you’re a solo female traveler over 50 like me, don’t hesitate to go. Paris is walkable, welcoming, and endlessly inspiring. These 23 must-do Paris experiences have brought me so much joy — and I hope they do the same for you.

Bon voyage, and let the Parisian magic sweep you off your feet.
