I explored Manhattan when I was driving through Kansas on a recent extended road trip to Arizona. My daughter- and son-in-law are stationed in Kansas at nearby Fort Riley for the next year. Because of this I intend to visit them multiple times. This was my first stay with them and of course I want to explore the area. It’s part of my mission to discover fantastic destinations that are perfect for solo female travelers like myself. The Midwest is a hot bed of off the radar, quiet spots that may appeal to a section of my fellow over 50 female travelers that would rather explore closer to home.

When you’re in Manhattan, Kansas, there’s no better way to kick off your day than with a stop at Varsity Donuts like we did. In the heart of Aggieville, this iconic donut shop has been the go-to spot for locals and visitors alike since 2011. Known for its fluffy donuts and quirky ambiance, it’s more than just a place to eat—it’s an experience. Whether you’re a donut purist or someone who appreciates bold flavors, Varsity Donuts has something for everyone.

You’ll find Varsity Donuts at 704 N. Manhattan Avenue, right in the middle of Aggieville, the city’s buzzing downtown district. The shop opens early every day at 6:00 AM, making it the perfect first stop for your day’s adventures. It’s hard to miss, with its retro signage and inviting storefront.
