The Top 3 Reasons To Try Solo Travel For Women This Year

Solo travel for women is an incredible way to discover new parts of the world, have meaningful self-reflection, and build confidence. But what if you’re traveling solo for the first time and aren’t sure where to start?

I always advise women who are interested in solo travel to start small. Go to a movie, dine solo at your favorite restaurant, or explore your nearest city. Whichever way you choose to start know that you don’t need to take on the entire world (although once you get the hang of it, the sky is the limit).

Find out how to stay safe on the road when you travel solo.

In this post, I will guide you through the top three reasons women should travel solo this year. From learning about yourself to meeting new people, solo travel has a plethora of benefits that can help women push their boundaries and embrace the unknown. Benefits of Solo Travel for Women

The benefits of solo travel are many, and it’s a great way for women to gain more self-confidence and independence. Also, solo travel allows women to pace themselves and make their own decisions, giving them the freedom to explore and discover new places without worrying about a travel companion’s preferences. Last, solo travel gives women the opportunity to learn more about themselves and challenge themselves in new ways. By traveling alone, women can better discover their interests and passions and ‌be themselves while traveling. Overall, traveling solo can be an empowering experience that can help women feel more confident and capable.

1. Self-Discovery

When you only have yourself to rely on, it is amazing at what you will find out about yourself. I can honestly say that I have discovered more about myself when I travel that at any other time. If you are struggling to find your meaning, particularly in midlife, solo travel is an excellent way to come back home to yourself.

Finding your true self

I am a perfect example of finding my true self through solo travel. I learn so much about myself when I travel alone. As an introvert, I never imagined that I could ever have incredible experiences and discover new places on my own. Once I took the leap, I found I could do anything if I put my mind to it. I discovered a strength that I did not know I had.

Learning to be independent

Every step you take and on each solo trip is about learning how to be independent. Each decision you make is entirely yours. Mastering new adventures and new destinations help to give you the confidence to become more independent in all aspects of your life. 15 years ago I never would have imagined that I could ever walk into a restaurant by myself, much less sit at a table and dine on my own. Now, I barely think about it. Imagine how incredible it feels to have that level of independence.

Exploring different cultures

I have traveled to Paris and to Ireland and these two very different cultures taught me so much. I believe we can learn new ways of doing things and gain a new understanding for other cultures by traveling solo.

The knowledge you gain from all those experiences can follow you home. Have you ever taken a trip and incorporated a little aspect of that culture, be it a new food, or a new style into your everyday life?

For instance, when I was in Paris and witnessed the effortless style of the women I spotted on the street. That prompted me to incorporate simple and classic pieces of clothing into my wardrobe.

We as Americans think we have all the answers for everything. Traveling will open your mind to other possibilities, other ways of doing things.

Developing new skills and hobbies

Solo travel is a unique opportunity to develop new skills and hobbies that you may not have had time for in your everyday life. Whether it’s learning a new language or picking up a new activity, solo travel allows travelers to explore their interests and build confidence in their abilities. One of my favorite things to do when I travel is take a class. I’ve taken glass art classes, a sailing class, and painted a watercolor while in a kayak.

Fighting fear, anxiety and insecurities

This is the biggie! In order to travel solo, you need to overcome some level of fear. Honestly, every solo trip I take I experience fear. Fear of breaking down on the road. Fear of getting lost. Fear of not being able to actually do it. I’ve learned to face my fears. The excitement from actually experiencing a new adventure far outweighs the fear. With conquering each new fear comes a sense of confidence. Pretty soon those anxieties. and insecurities fade. You’ll find that new found confidence will spill into other aspects of your life.

2. Travel Solo For Women To Build Increased Confidence and Resilience

Confidence is one of the most prized gifts you gain from solo travel. By learning to solve unforeseen challenges and learning how to embrace a bit of discomfort, you gain confidence in yourself. The more you bend, the more flexible you become.

Embrace Challenges

Solo travel can be challenging ‌but it allows you to make decisions independently and build trust in yourself. You may experience loneliness or feel isolated. You may face challenges with transportation or lodging. A museum may be closed when you had scheduled a visit. Travel is all about being comfortable with discomfort. What would life be like if everything were predictable and nothing ever went wrong. Pretty boring, huh?

Overcome Fear of the Unknown

Solo travel can be a great way for women to overcome their fear of the unknown. By traveling alone, you are forced to face any challenges head-on and test your skills as a traveler. This can help you develop confidence and become more independent and self-reliant.

Enhance Problem-Solving Skills

Solo travel can help travelers explore new places and experiences with a greater freedom and spontaneity. It’s also an excellent way to enhance problem-solving skills. By putting yourself in unfamiliar situations and facing challenges alone, you’ll learn how to think quickly and make decisions on the fly. We can only gain this through solo travel, so it’s worth trying it this year.

3. Freedom to Explore at Your Own Pace

We all have our own way of traveling. Some of us enjoy packing as much as they can into a day. While others appreciate taking some time to be still. To absorb the atmosphere in their new surroundings. When you are traveling solo, you have the freedom to do what you want, when you want to do it.

Meet Interesting People Along the Way

Solo travel allows travelers to take the time to explore a new destination in depth. This includes opening yourself up to meeting new people. This is one I sometimes have trouble with. Being an introvert, I’d rather clean my house than to engage in small talk, yet I have met some interesting people from around the world. Sometimes it takes a very outgoing person to get me to open up, and other times I find someone who I have a common interest in and the next thing you know, we are following each other on social media and chatting like we’ve known each other for ages!

You are more approachable if you are traveling solo. More often than not that is a good thing.

Learn New Skills and Adopt Different Perspectives

Traveling is a learned skill all in itself. Navigating public transportation, finding your way through a busy airport for a connecting flight, backing up a 30 foot RV into a campsite, all these things take some skill and patience. I love to do things myself. The more you do it, the easier it becomes. Coming from small town Wisconsin where we drive everywhere, I have the ultimate respect for people who can find their way through a crowded subway!

Cherish Unforgettable Experiences

The experiences you gain when you travel solo are invaluable. You find that even the most insignificant things become treasured memories. The entertaining and kind-hearted gentleman at the crepe stand in Paris, the vast nighttime sky full of stars on that solo camping trip, or how a special painting in a museum took your breath away. These experiences will stay with you your entire life.

Solo travel is an enriching life experience for women. Typically, we are programmed to take care of others. When we travel on our own, we just have ourselves. To many of us the thought of doing something just for ourselves if a foreign concept, but one we should try at least once in our lifetime. Increased confidence, learning about other cultures and developing new skills are important for our well being, particularly in midlife.

Why not make this the year you discover the benefits of solo travel.
