South Wood County Park Campground in Wisconsin Rapids: Tranquil County Park Camping In Wisconsin

South Wood County Park Campground Is An Inexpensive Place To Park It

Besides Wisconsin State Park camping, county park camping Wisconsin is my favorite like I’ve talked about before on the blog. I’ve camped at South Wood County Park Campground once before, but this time around I really took advantage of the park and campground. Last year when I camped at South Wood County Park Campground it rained for a good portion of the weekend, putting a damper on much of the outside activities. This would not be the case this time around.

The actual location of the campground can trip you up if you are not familiar with the park. When I plugged South Wood County Park Campground into my GPS the first time, it wanted to take me to the park on the north side of Lake Wazeecha. The campground is actually on the south side of the lake past Red Sands beach and shelters. Turn off of 80th Street onto S Park Road.

South Wood County Park Campground has 73 sites, 54 of those are electric hookup. Some sites have waterfront access to put your kayak in the water. The campground is on Lake Wazeecha. There is also a public boat landing next to the campground. Most of the sites have some shade from the towering trees, which is a welcome addition to the sweltering summer heat. Some sites are more private (sites 44-50) than others. This trip I was on site #2 and it was not private. Honestly, I wouldn’t choose that site again. It was on the main road in and right across from the bathroom/shower building. Live and learn, right?

Vivi didn’t mind the lack of seclusion.

Speaking of the bathrooms and showers, there is one main building in the campground offering flush toilets and showers. They clean the building daily, which I saw first hand since I was right across the road. The building is modern and the showers are nice. There are also pit toilets located around the campground.

Most of the sites are level and are spacious. Some sites are REALLY spacious. Each has a fire ring and picnic table. Wood and ice are available to purchase on site. There is also a campground host that can help and answer questions.

Things To Do Near South Wood County Park Campground

The very first thing I suggest is to take advantage of the amazing 4 mile hiking/biking trail that takes you around Lake Wazeecha. Some of it is paved, and some of the dirt path meanders through the north side of the park, hugging the lake. You go over cute foot bridges and past plenty of benches to sit and rest while enjoying a view of the lake. There are even bikes to rent by the parking lot of the White Sands Beach Pavillion and swimming area on the north side of the lake. I will not lie. I loved this trail and it was my favorite thing about camping here.

The easy access to the lake makes South Wood County Park Campground perfect for kayakers, paddle boarders, boaters, and all other types of water sports. Scoring one of those desired waterfront sites would make it even better. While I brought my kayak along, it was a windy weekend so I never took it off my car.

Did you know that South Wood County Park is the scene of the annual Wisconsin State Water Ski Championship?

If you hit the right weekend in July, you can catch the world’s largest and longest running Water Ski tournament, the Wisconsin State Water Ski Championship. You can find out the dates by checking out the Wisconsin Rapids Aqua Skiers website. If you aren’t there on that weekend, the Aqua Skiers put on a show every Sunday night at 6:30 June through August. To best see the show, head to Red Sand Beach on the south side of Lake Wazeecha. This was a bonus for staying an extra night at South Wood County Park Campground. Enjoy a King Cone Ice Cream from the food truck.

Speaking of Red Sand Beach, this is an excellent place to capture some beach time. It’s a simple walk from the campground. There is a big shelter, and plenty of parking. It’s right on the route for that 4 mile walk around the lake. The red sand is no joke. It’s pretty cool and there’s plenty of room to spread out with a swimming area.
