What do you think of when you hear “America The Beautiful”?
Perhaps snow capped mountains, the wide open prairie, lakes glistening in the midday sun, and bison?
Wait what? Bison?
Yes bison!
How about famous places such as Yellowstone, the Badlands, and Mount Rushmore?
I think of all these places and things that make up this beautiful country of ours.
What would be the best way to see all of America’s beauty?
How about if you moved out of your apartment, put your things in storage, rented a Jeep, and took off for a 12 state adventure which included all these places (and bison too)?
That’s just what author Theresa Goodrich and her husband Jim did.
In her second road trip tale, Two Lane Gems Vol. 2 Bison Are Giant And Other Observation From An American Road Trip, she recalls an epic 35 day road trip. This time, from Illinois to the Northwestern coast.
Not only does she share in vivid detail all the places and things they saw along the way, she tells it with a full dose of humor!
They take off on their road trip with a loosely planned itinerary. Much of their nights are spent camping which is just fine by them. My absolute favorite story in the book is at Sage Creek Campground in South Dakota near the Badlands. Here the bison roam freely around the campground and Theresa wakes up one morning only to find her nearly face to face with this giant creature! Oh my!!!
This is a month of adventure, breathtaking sites, and roadside attractions.
Never having been to any of the places Theresa and Jim visit, I appreciated seeing the full color pictures she shared in this book. I felt like I was right there as she described camping at Diamond Lake in Oregon. I could almost imagine waking up and looking out my tent door to that fantastic view.
I realized how much I’ve missed out by not road tripping west. Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, the Black Hills, along with a whole host of lesser known sights.
This is a story of the ultimate road trip, with all its challenges, and all the adventures.
6,832 miles later, they get back to Illinois, return their faithful friend Jeannie the Jeep, and close the book on another road trip.
I cannot wait to read about Theresa’s next adventure!!
