I like county park camping in Wisconsin. Camping at Wisconsin County parks is budget friendly and county parks offer quiet, no-nonsense camping. They are the primary choice when I camp with my girlfriend’s camping group for those reasons.
White Mound County Park Camping
I like to try fresh places to camp and when our group chose White Mound County Park for our final fall camp in October, of course, I was onboard. White Mound County Park is in beautiful Sauk County near Spring Green to the south and the Wisconsin Dells area to the northeast. Anyone who has been to this area knows there is an abundance of rolling hills along with lush green valley. This time of the year, the multicolored leaves were making their annual appearance.

White Mound County Park is nestled in one of those valleys along 104 acre White Mound Lake. The lake is slow, no wake, so it’s perfect for kayaking, paddle boarding, swimming, canoeing, and fishing.
The GPS had me going through Wisconsin Dells, Taking Highway 12 all the way to Highway 23. When I got to the parking spot for Pewits Rest past New Life Lavender and Cherry Farm, Highway 12 is sprinkled with twists and turns along the two-way road. I was happy there was little traffic because pulling Lulu my camper on this stretch was slow going. But boy, was that ride gorgeous!! Hills and valleys, twists and turns, passing creeks and farmland. THIS is Wisconsin in all its glory. To top it off, like I wrote earlier, the trees were beginning their fall show. It was true theater and a wonderful way to pass the driving time.

It seemed like that stretch of drive took forever and yet in no time at all; I was driving through the entrance to White Mound County Park. The landscape continued and I came upon the lake, what looked like a relatively new office, and parking lot. I checked in, and drove up to the water fill station near the office walking path. The dump station is on the hill on the opposite side of the road. Then I took the road to the campground and found my spot(19E). Some of our camping group were already there. There were six of us camping that weekend. I had arrived on a Thursday and was planning on staying through Tuesday. I like to reserve the day before and leave the day after a busy weekend. Since this was mid-October, the campground was not full.

My campsite ran along a wooded area. There are tall trees for plenty of shelter, and the campsites are level, spacious, with picnic tables and fire rings. I had no problems backing into my site. White Mound County Park has 47 campsites, of that, 37 have electrical hookup. There is a nice shower building and a bonus of coin-operated washer and dryer. There are also pit toilets at opposite ends of the campground.

There are paddle board and kayak rentals at the office, so I didn’t bring my kayak with me. I had our 12 week old puppy, Vivi, along, and wanted to get her used to the kayak. I should have brought my kayak because the rentals are small, and they probably weren’t the best choice for an introduction to the kayak for Vivi. She jumped out when I thought I settled her, right into a patch of green algae! We ended up covered in the green stuff! Thank heavens for that washing machine!

Driving past the campground entrance on White Mound Drive, you will eventually come to the boat landing for the lake. You can also launch your kayak from there, too. There is a park shelter and benches scattered around. This is also a magnificent spot to view the tree-covered hills.
One thing I did was to walk some of the many miles of trails in and around the park. There are five trails, including an extensive horse trail (horse lovers will find designated horse camping in the park too). Since Vivi was small, I didn’t want to walk her too much, so we ended up doing the shorter Willie Walsh Nature Trail and some connecting walking paths. This trail is on a hill, as is the campground. Walking through the woods, you don’t realize what’s in store when you get the end. When you reach the end of the hill, you witness the most stunning view overlooking White Mound Lake! It is magnificent, in early fall. I can only image what it looks like in summer with the wildflowers and full color in fall.

That was all Vivi could manage, and I didn’t realize just how far we were from our campsite. I ended up carrying Vivi all the way back! Poor little thing was exhausted. Boy, did she sleep great that night.
Pro Tip: If you enjoy doing a little bargain shopping, head into nearby Spring Green and stop at the Bargain Nook. It’s a fabulous spot to score Lands End clothing at a bargain price. They have a wide selection of returns and seconds here. Then stop over at Prem Meats next door for food supplies.
One downside (or plus, depending on your situation) is that the campground is a bit of a distance from the nearest town if you enjoy being nearer civilization, but this rarely hinders me too much. The big plus is that it is quiet enough that the solo camper will enjoy it.

So if you are looking for county park camping Wisconsin, White Mound Park is in an excellent location, near the middle of the state. Near Wisconsin Dells and Madison. Perfect for scenic county park camping in Wisconsin.
