Discovering Braise North: A First-Timer’s Experience at Lakewood, Wisconsin’s Farm-to-Table Culinary Gem

Braise North Lakewood is a coffeehouse that morphs into a wine bar in the evenings. If the name Braise sounds familiar, it’s because Braise North is related to Braise in Milwaukee, a critically acclaimed restaurant and cooking school in the Walker’s Point neighborhood.

I recently had the pleasure of visiting this charming locale, nestled in the heart of Lakewood, Wisconsin. Let me take you through my experience, its association with Braise in Milwaukee, and, of course, its mouthwatering menu.

The moment you arrive at Braise North, you’ll experience a farm-to-table atmosphere with a rustic farmhouse vibe. If you’re looking for a relaxing escape from the city, Lakewood’s serene atmosphere and picturesque scenery make it the perfect destination.
Tracing back to the roots of Braise North, the Braise story begins with its flagship restaurant in Milwaukee. Braise was born out of the vision of Chef Dave Swanson, who sought to create an immersive dining experience that combines locally sourced ingredients with innovative culinary artistry. Following the enormous success of Braise in Milwaukee, the concept of a second establishment came to life, hence the creation of Braise North.

The connection between Braise North and the original Braise is deep-seated and goes beyond their shared moniker. Like its sibling in Milwaukee, Braise North is a steadfast advocate for the farm-to-table philosophy. Both restaurants source most of their ingredients from local Wisconsin farmers, ensuring their dishes are not only fresh but also contribute to the local economy.

Stepping inside Braise North is like stepping into a warm, welcoming space. Shelves with local food items for purchase, including house made syrups, greet you as you walk in the side door. Behind them is a seating area surrounded by shelves of wine. Housed within a former church, Braise North is the best place in Lakewood to sit, have a morning coffee, and either enjoy your own company (my case), or visit with friends.
The small former church has ample seating.

Onto the most exciting part – the menu! Braise North, like its counterpart is always changing their menu except for some staples.

My Visit To Braise North

I visited on a Saturday morning in mid July. They posted the drink and food menu on the board on the counter. Breakfast is lighter fare. I choose quiche with a latte. I was told the quiche was one of the staples on the morning menu. There is a large pastry case offering freshly made items. I even spotted macarons!

I grabbed a small table and took a seat facing the counter. Clearly, this is a popular place. There was an influx of customers coming and going all the while I was there. Some just stopping in for a glass of water from the help yourself dispenser along the wall. I found it to be a welcoming spot for solo travelers.

It didn’t take long for my quiche to make its way to my table. It looked delicious and that first fork full exceeded my expectations. The quiche was done to perfection, light and fluffy with ham chunks, onion and cheese. The cornmeal crust was an excellent surprise, tasty and light. I think I had a smile on my face with every bite. That and the latte were the perfect start to my day exploring Lakewood.
